This stitch along is to be fun and relaxing.
Plus how great will it be to know that when you are stitching your hexies there will be others from this group stitching with you!

And when completed you will have a pretty, colourful wallhanging.

Sew Over the Rainbow Quilt Pattern Plan

Sew Over the Rainbow Hexagon Section Plan

This Sew Over the Rainbow project will begin with 12 rows of coloured hexagons, as in the plan above.

Each Wednesday another colour will be celebrated, and added.
Feel free to work at whatever pace works best for you.

After the 12 coloured rows are completed, I will have the next part of the quilt plan ready for you.

Request the Sew Over the Rainbow Colour Plan & Templates here

For my wallhanging I'm using a ¾" hexagon, which will make the 'rainbow' section about 15" x 21".

Tone-on-Tone fabrics from the 12 Colour Wheel colours.

You will need 19 - 2" squares from each of the 12 colours.

~Be sure to print this web page instructions and the Fabric Key above for reference.

Victoriana Dresdens Colour Wheel Wallhanging

This is my Victoriana Dresdens Colour Wheel which was the inspiration for the rainbow of colours I used for this project.

~Here's What Else You'll Need for This Project~

Getting Ready to Sew Hexies

  • Print the coloured plan & templates* (request pdf file above).
*If you happen to have a hexagon cutter (like the one in the photo, or another brand) that will give you the same size hexagons as we are using, please feel free to cut scrap cardstock (like magazine inserts) to make up your hexagon templates.
  • 12 cotton threads to match your fabrics (see Fabric Key above)

Plastic Box Sewing Kit

  • Small box (plastic is weather proof - though a pretty basket would be lovelier!) to hold sewing supplies and current hexie templates & patches. I also like to keep my travel sewing kit on hand, so I can quickly load it and go...

Victoriana Sewing Kit

I enjoy using this Victoriana Sewing Kit I designed for my hand sewing and applique. It holds my patches, needles, thread & scissors - everything I need, so I can also sew a take-along project whenever I need to wait somewhere.

~Week #1~

Red-Violet

Prepare Your Hexagons for Stitching

Hexagon Patches

For each row you will need 19-2" square patches in the colour family of the week (see the Fabric Key above for more details).

Hold one of your cardstock templates, centered within the patch, and trim the fabric with scissors, leaving about a ¼" seam allowance.

I found a wonderful tutorial online that will take you through the next few steps.

Lori uses a paper clip to hold the first edge over, and then she bastes and prepares the patches like this.

Tips:

~ Be sure to give yourself a good seam allowance to work with.
The first patch I skimped and I gave myself extra trouble basting.
~ I found it best to remove the paper clip before stitching the last corner, because of how small this patch is.
~ Leave the cardstock within the patches for now.

When your 19 patches are basted, you need to join them together like I've shown in this guide:

Align the two patches you are joining, and whip stich them with matching thread using Lori's tutorial here - Scroll down too, so you can see the close up of her variation on the whip stitch directions, which she does a terrific job showing us how!

Tips:

~ I like to take a small stitch in the seam allowance as I place my needle for the first stitch.
This places the bulky knot lower in the patch and not in the corner.
~ I whip stitch the first corner with two stitches. Then it's about 10 stitches across. For the final corner take 3 stitches, looping in the thread as shown, then take a small stitch down into the seam allowance, towards the center of the patch before clipping your thread, for a little extra security.
~ When pairing the patches, to keep track of which edge needs to be stitched together, I've been using the paper clip to hold them (and remind me) until I've taken a few stitches.
~Fold the hexies in half when needed to help align the next edges.
~After you've stitched completely around a hexie, you can remove the cardstock template (by popping one corner out). Leave the basting stitches in place.
